The
Road to World Domination?
Thanks
to statcounter.com
, TMG
is able to record where
our visitors are surfing
in from! Yes, I did train
as a geography teacher
but spent most of my
career specialising in
maths!
I was
brought up on the
outskirts of Liverpool.
When I was in Third Year
Juniors (nb Year 5 in
today's regime!) our
teacher was the fearsome
Mr. Taylor. He was an
avid reader of the Daily
Telegraph and the
Liverpool Echo. From the
Telegraph, we always knew
the price of a box of
Hake from Fleetwood Fish
Exchange, from which we
maintained bar charts etc
and the weekly average
price also in bar charts
for a whole school year!
Bizarre to say the least!
However,
one activity from the
Liverpool Echo has stuck
me through all of my life
stimulating an interest
in world geography. The
Echo carried a chart from
Monday to Saturday
showing where all
Liverpool registered
ships were in the world.
These would tell you
whether a ship had
arrived, was expected,
leaving all these
glamourously named sea
ports around the world
like Accra and Brisbane.
Mr. Taylor us allocated
five ships each, which we
traced on world map
outlines having used an
atlas to ascertain there
exact location. I learned
so much about world
cities! When I showed my
older brother, we both
took up our own made to
order fleets! Thanks for
that Mr.Taylor!
