The Ballad of Little Dan and the Rivet Counters (Forest Dude)

Once upon a time, eleven-year-old Little Dan was invited to exhibit a model railway at his local model railway club’s annual exhibition. His layout was based on a motive power depot a Blue Diesel in Yorkshire.

The show was based in a local secondary school, but the sports hall was not available, and the club had to use ordinary classrooms Each classroom accommodated three or four exhibits or trade and society stands.

The show was about an hour in on the first day. One member of the club is strolling around as one of the show stewards and saunters into one classroom. He finds Little Dan slumped behind his layout and clearly very distressed. He immediately leads Little Dan down to the refreshment rooms and fixes him up with a Mars bar and a can of Coca-Cola

Little Dan calms down enough to be able to explain that two visitors had watched his layout in actions, taken out an i-pad. They checked the blue diesels and discovered that at least one of his locos had been continuously based in Scotland! They then harangued him about the layout's inaccuracies and piled on the criticism. When they had achieved their aims, walked out of the room, leaving Little Dan despondent.

The club chairman heard about this incident and came along. He told Little Dan about the sad nature of the odious "Rivet Counter" and gave him a strategy for future shows. " Keep smiling and be pretend to appreciate their ramblings. Pull out a diary and seek details of their star layouts and when he could see them in exhibitions in the future BUT do not let them see you are upset". A tough ask for a young lad!

I moved away from the area but have gone back for club shows and Little Dan happily told me that he had shamed "rivet counters" on several occasions.

What has happened to Little Dan since? He has steadily worked at developing his own Derails model railway business to challenge the likes of Hattons, Model railways Direct in a very competitive market.

I really wish those tedious and negative "rivet counters" could see what he has achieved.
